SOANE TRAVELS: ARGENTINA
The Architecture of Buenos Aires and the Environs
plus a special day trip to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay

with an optional 3-night trip to the
Estancias of the Province of Buenos Aires

Soane Travels will take its biggest leap into new worlds in 2009 as we head to the Southern Hemisphere with places greatly influenced during the time of the British Empire and during the time of Soane.

These trips are designed exclusively for current or new members of the Soane Patrons’ Circle and are reserved for 24 to 26 discerning travelers who are looking for an extraordinary journey exploring architecture, art and the decorative arts.

October 2, Friday
DEPARTURE IN THE EVENING
Depart New York's JFK Airport on an overnight flight to Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Possible flights:
American Airlines - AA 955 JFK-EZE departs 10:10pm, arrives 10:05am next day
Delta Airlines - DL 193 JFK-EZE departs 10pm, arrives 10:20am next day

October 3, Saturday
BUENOS AIRES
Arrive this morning in Buenos Aires, the “Paris of South America.”  Transfer to the luxurious Casa Sur, our home for the next six nights.  The morning and lunch are at leisure.  In the afternoon an orientation tour will introduce this multicultural city and its many styles and neighborhoods, including Puerto Madero, the recently revitalized port boasting a pedestrian bridge by architect Santiago Calatrava; San Telmo, whose 18th- and 19th-century architecture is well preserved; and dynamic La Boca, known for its resident artists and colorful buildings.  Our welcome dinner is at the nearby Alvear Palace Hotel.

October 4, Sunday
PARANA RIVER DELTA
Discover a lovely private garden in the San Isidro district [pending confirmation], a residential area with elegant mansions and river views.  Continue to the Paraná River Delta for a boat ride and an asado lunch at a private home.  This afternoon visit the new Museum of Fine Arts in Tigre, housed in a former casino and hotel that has recently been elegantly restored.  Return to Buenos Aires for dinner.

October 5, Monday
BUENOS AIRES
In beautiful Palermo, the Soho of Buenos Aires, visit an architecture studio and the Museo Xul Solar, with its award-winning design by Pablo T. Beitia.  After lunch at the exclusive Circulo de Armas, tour the striking Palacio Barolo and the Banco de Londres, a unique concrete building designed in the 1960’s by Clorindo Testa. This evening we have some private visits and dinner.

October 6, Tuesday 
BUENOS AIRES
Depart for Palacio Pereda, home of the Brazilian Embassy, to see ceiling paintings designed by Spanish mural artist José Maria Sert.  We are then invited to view a private collection of contemporary Argentine art.  Lunch is at a local restaurant.  In the late afternoon enjoy a curatorial tour of the Isaac Fernandez Blanco Museum of Hispano-Americano Art, in the historic residence of the late architect Martin Noel.  Dinner is at a local restaurant.

October 7, Wednesday
COLONIA, URUGUAY
Cross the Rio de la Plata by hydrofoil to Colonia del Sacramento, a 17th-century Portuguese settlement retaining its colonial flavor.  Spend the morning in the well-preserved old town, exploring its winding cobblestone streets and colorful houses.  Return to Buenos Aires after lunch.  A special farewell dinner at the elegant Jockey Club includes a private tango performance.

October 8, Thursday
BUENOS AIRES
Spend the day discovering the sophisticated neighborhood of Recoleta, with its colonial and French-influenced buildings.  Stroll through the Recoleta Cemetery, where Evita Peron is entombed in the Duarte mausoleum, and see Testa’s extraordinary National Library building.  After lunch, admire the architecture of the Fine Arts Museum, transformed from an old pumping station by Alejandro Bustillo, and the Malba Museum of Contemporary Art (Fundación Costantini / Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires).  Dinner is at a popular local restaurant.

October 9, Friday
BUENOS AIRES / then either DEPARTURES FOR USA / or continue on the optional 3-night trip
Morning visit(s) and lunch, then afternoon free - with possible late check out of the hotel.  Early evening transfer to the airport for the overnight flight to New York.

We head to the southeast of
Buenos Aires Province and the rolling hills surrounding Tandil

October 9, Friday
BUENOS AIRES/ TANDIL
Following a morning visit in Buenos Aires and farewell to those returning that night to the USA, we drive to Tandil with lunch en route.  Check in early this evening at Estancia Ave Maria - www.avemariatandil.com.ar.  Dinner at the hotel tonight.

October 10, Saturday
TANDIL
Visit to Estancia Acelain with lunch, then another estancia.  Dinner at the hotel.

October 11, Sunday
TANDIL
A day touring the area with visits being arranged.  Dinner at the hotel.

October 12, Monday
TANDIL / BUENOS AIRES / DEPARTURE FOR USA
Return to Buenos Aires with lunch en route  - probably at Estancia La Concepcion.   Arrive at the airport for the overnight flight to New York.

American Airlines - AA 956 EZE-JFK departs 8:15pm, arriving 6:05am next day
Delta Airlines - DL 110 EZE-ATL departs 8:30pm, arrive JFK 11:05am next day (via ATL)

October 13, Tuesday           
ARRIVAL BACK IN THE UNITED STATES
Arrive this morning in New York.

TRIP SPECIFICS - as of 17 February 2009 - all arrangements are subject to change::

COSTS:             
$7,395.00 per person double occupancy - this total price includes donation* to the Soane.
                  Single Accommodations: add $1,050 (limited availability)

The cost per person includes 7-nights in deluxe hotels, breakfast each day, all lunches and dinners as specified, receptions as noted on the itinerary, local transportation by private deluxe coach, excursion to Uruguay, all entries, guides. 

DONATION* 
Each traveler is requested to join the 2009 Soane Patron’s Circle with a fully tax deductible contribution of $750 per person.
NOTE: Checks for the donation must be payable to:   Sir John Soane’s Museum Foundation

EXTENSION:  
$1,995.00 per person double occupancy for the 3-nights deluxe accommodations and all related items as mentioned before. 
               Single Accommodations: add $495 (very limited availability)

FLIGHTS:      
Please note, all flight arrangements into and out of Argentina are up to the individual traveler.

DEPOSIT:        
Deposits of $1,500 per person to Academic Arrangements Abroad are payable by check or credit card. 
If doing the extension to the Estancias, make your deposit $1,800 per person.
